Meet Joe

Humble Beginnings

From an early age, I realized that I really liked doing two things: helping people and math.

The math came first. From an early age, math was my strongest subject. Every year, the problems would get harder and harder, and I never backed down. I went head-to-head with the really tough ones, and before I knew it, I was winning.

By the time I made it to High School, I was convinced I wanted to spend my life working with numbers, I just didn’t know how I was gonna do it.

At some point, we were offered the opportunity to take college-level courses, and in my senior year, everything came together. I finally realized what I wanted to do with my life.

I wanted to be an accountant.

Even before enrolling in college, I was helping people with their returns. In 1999, I filed my first returns, and there have been thousands more over the years.

By the time I graduated in 2004, I was already working for local accounting firms and was starting to get real experience.

Most of the clients I was working with were local small businesses. The owners worked hard. They were my neighbors. Helping them with their taxes and accounting felt right.

I had always dreamed of opening my own practice, and now I had a direction. My focus would be on helping local small businesses so they have time to focus on growing and keeping their own clients happy.

After 16 years of saving my pennies, I was finally ready to go out on my own. I’ve never for a second felt like it was the wrong decision.

Serving the community and delivering real service turned out to be a foundation I could build on. When I see a client at the supermarket or around town, it feels like things are headed in the right direction.

Big firms have their place, but only a small firm can take the time to really get the details right. You’re not a number here, you’re part of the family.

All the marketing in the world can only tell half the story. The truth is that you won’t really see how good we are until you give us a try.

Consider this an invitation to see how much better your business could be with an accountant who thinks like a partner.

Book a call today, and before you know it, you’ll be asking yourself why you didn’t switch sooner, and we’ll be saying…

Welcome to the family,

“You’re not a number here, you’re part of the family.”

Ask Joe︱Tax

Can you do the personal returns for my staff?

Yes. We have a popular program that lets you gift your employees yearly, filling services and practices of all sizes, really love it.

Can you lower my tax bill?

If it’s possible, we can do it. In plain English, we’ll explain what’s deductible and what credits you qualify for. Then we’ll give you a simple way to capture everything so we can make the most out of your next return.

I got a letter from the IRS. What should I do?

Take it seriously and respond quickly. Forfeitures, seizures, and fines come next. With your permission, we can speak with the IRS on your behalf and put together a plan that makes sense. Don’t wait. Don’t ignore notices. The IRS doesn’t forget.

What expenses can I deduct?

That depends on whether you’re filing as an individual, or business, or both. Each type has its own set of rules and limits. Once we understand your situation, we can make clear recommendations so your next return can be your best return.

Can I deduct my home office or business vehicle?

Before anyone can answer that, we need to make sure your setup is proper for your situation. Many expenses can be deducted as long as they are directly related to your business. Every year, there are new changes to these deductions, and our job is to make sure you understand in plain English what’s deductible and what’s not.

Ask Joe︱Accounting

We use QuickBooks is that OK?

No matter what software you’re using, we can help as long as we can get access either via the cloud or a direct remote connection.

Do I need an accounting system?

Yes. But why? Our job is to get you the best results for a fair price. Your job is to be as organized as you can so we can focus on what’s important. The good news is that most software is inexpensive and easy to use. If you’re not using anything now, we’ll make a suggestion you can live with and make sure you know how to use everything.

What about payroll?

We’ll make sure you can run payroll in a few minutes, and we’ll take care of your taxes, withholdings, and other details so you can focus on business. If you have a system already, we’ll double-check to make sure it’s set up properly, and if you need a system, we’ll make a suggestion that makes sense for your situation.

We’ve fallen behind. Can you help?

Sure, no problem. We’ll get you caught up and put a plan in place so that it doesn’t happen again. If you have outstanding liabilities, we’ll prioritize them and make a realistic schedule that satisfies everyone, even the IRS.

Do we come to your office?

Sure, our offices are in McAllen, Texas but we have clients all over the country. We can take care of you as long as your online but that doesn’t mean you can’t stop by anytime. If you do we happen to like all varieties of cookies and donuts.

Do I need to form an LLC?

In many cases, an LLC makes perfect sense, but in others, it’s not the best choice. Take us up on our free call, and we can make a real recommendation and not a guess.

Am I using the right entity?

You might be. We’ll need to understand the details before we can make suggestions. We can tell you that over the years, we’ve met hundreds of individuals and companies that were not set up the right way, and they wound up paying for an expensive lesson from the IRS.

Do I need a separate bank account for my business?

Yes. The money you’ll spend to untangle personal and business expenses from a combined account is wasted money. We’ll suggest an account structure that will make both of our lives easier and eliminate wasted time.

How do I pay myself as a member or owner of the business?

You can draw a salary, or you can take a periodic distribution depending on your situation. In some circumstances, both make sense. We’re here to understand your situation and get you set up in a way that allows you to get the most benefit from your hard work.

But smart

We love numbers so you don’t have to. With decades of accounting experience and happy clients across the country maybe it’s time to make a change and say hello to better and goodbye to just OK.
